July 4th celebrates the day when 56 men were willing to risk their lives, their fortune, and their sacred honor to declare independence for the United States of America. During Ronald Reagan's presidency, because of the patriotism his optimism helped renew, there were many historical events, especially Liberty Weekend which restored the Statue of Liberty to greatness. However, it was July 4, 1967, when Ronald Reagan as Governor also helped display the true meaning of patriotism. During a staff party at Nancy and Ronald Reagan's home, a girl whose family were guests was having trouble swimming. Seeing the distress of the swimmer, Ronald Reagan excused himself and fully clothed rushed into his pool to save her. While he is usually credited with saving 77 lives during his days at Dixon's Lowell Park, this was his 78th. In that moment of concern for another person, Ronald Reagan symbolized the meaning of a day meant to celebrate those who would join together to create a nation. We wish all readers a happy Independence Day!
